"The Advertiser" (UK) 6 June 2008 Buddy Lewis is from Houston, Texas, though he now resides in the Ozark Mountains near Branson, Missouri. During his long and respected career Buddy has worked alongside such greats as Lefty Frizzell, Willie Nelson, Freddie Fender, Doug Kershaw and Johnny Rodrigues Buddy Lewis music is traditional country and honky tonk and this sound has graced four albums to date; "Songs From The Heartland", "I'm A Country Man" (reviewed April 2006), "Honky Tonk Singer” (reviewed January 2007) and “Talking To The Man In The Moon”, the current release. The first track on the new album, “What Seems Like Hell To You”, reminded me of the great Tom T. Hall and, really, that goes for the rest of the fifteen tracks which are interesting stories turned into entertaining songs and delivered in a warm almost conversational style. As you will see from the above Buddy is no stranger to “Sounds Country” and I hope he will remain a feature for years to come for he really does preserve those country sounds we have come to love since we first heard Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price and Tom T. Hall. “Talking To The Man In The Moon”(Ozark Records) is packed with variety, mostly describing the love Lewis has for his home, his heritage, a good woman and, of course his music. There are wonderful stories of going back home (“Where The Blacktop Ends”), of the dangers of drinking and driving (“Don’t Give The Devil A Ride”), of the West’s great past (“Bounty Hunter”) and of lost love (“Somebody Cries”). Buddy pays tribute to Hank Williams with “Honky Tonk In Heaven”, where the writer uses lines and couplets from some of Hank’s most famous songs to build this beautiful remembrance. On this track I would like to mention the steel guitar of Houston’s Billy Phelps. Thankfully today the position has changed and both nations now make a real contribution to the global scene. In Australia country was once described as Slim Dusty, sheep shearing and “Waltzing Matilda”, today that could not be further from the truth thanks to the hard work and considerable talents of “new wave Aussie country performers” such as Neil Andrews and others. Andrews is an excellent singer/writer who pens story songs with traditional country themes transported to the modern day. His moods and subjects are diverse as beautifully portrayed by his album “Still Not Over You”. Neil penned eleven of the twelve tracks, and the strength and diversity of this work is guaranteed to draw the listener again and again. As you listen you will find humourus “Ladies In This Town”, “The Ballad Of Ronald Ryan #2”, modern song with an Elizabethan feel to it, a lovely cover of “The Letter Edged in Black” and stories about ignoring parental advice (“Drinkin’ and Women”), Charlatan preachers (“Holy Roller”), Lost love (“Still Not Over You”) and “Becky” one of the most beautiful sad songs I have ever heard. Dottie Rambo began writing songs at the age of seven and this God given talent revealed more than two and a half thousand songs in her lifetime recorded by many leading performers including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Barbara Mandrell, Dottie West, Crystal Gayle, Larry Gatlin, Tom T. Hall, Vince Gill, Whitney Houston and many others. A multi-award winner, Dottie’s her unique mountain style, black tinged voice has graced over a hundred albums (her own, The Rambos (Dottie, her husband Buck and Pattie Carpenter) and compilations). Health problems interrupted Dottie’s career throughout the eighties and nineties but she made a triumphant comeback in 2003 with the release of the album “Stand By The River” featuring a duet with Dolly Parton on the title cut. A few years ago she was instrumental in helping George Jones re-find Jesus and it was her encouragement that helped George record a Gospel double CD. One of Dottie’s most popular songs was “Build My Mansion Next Door To Jesus”. I am sure this has happened and that Jesus is mighty pleased to have Ms, Rambo as a neighbour.

“The Advertiser” (UK) 16 May 2008 Dale McKay is a traditional country music singer/writer from Manitoba, Canada. Dale’s first encounter with music was at age five when an Uncle presented him with an acoustic Hawaiian guitar. He fell in love with the instrument and it took him on a lifelong journey in country music. His earliest and lasting influences are the two Hanks, Williams and Snow though he has picked up inspiration from most of the classic country artists of the past fifty or sixty years. This wonderful musical journey has achieved for Dale radio play in Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the USA, a listing as the 10th Most Played Artist in June 2000 on the European Country Music Charts and has placed several of his songs on the Top 100 songs in Canada. Dale’s experience has been built on playing before all kinds of audiences, large and small, at fairs, rodeos, cabaret, country festivals and social functions. His wide appeal can be judged by listening to the wonderful album “Pure Vanilla” (Broadland). The album is totally original with songs in the traditional style and all written by Dale over the past few years. It was recorded in Nashville, produced by the late Gary Buck and featuring some of Music City's finest musicians; Rob Hajacos, David Russell (fiddle), Leo Jackson, Greg Galbraith (guitars), Sonny Garrish (Steel), Gene Chrisman and Milton Sledge (drums). There is certainly a lot of Hank in such songs as “My Heart Just Told Me”, “The Rose That Stands By Me”, “You Reap What You Sow” and “Honky Tonkin’ Blues”. Completing the programme are; “To Mend A Broken Heart”, “The Mighty Power Of Love”, “Call Me Up”, “In The Palm Of His Hand”, “Thanks To You”, “Ships In The Night”, “If Tomorrow’s Just Like Yesterday”. "Gospel Music In The Country Tradition" is a collection of some of Dale’s (and our) favourite spiritual songs and what a joy they are! Jerry Wallace succumbed to congestive heart failure on 5 May. He was eighty years old. Jerry enjoyed hits in the sixties such as "Shutters And Boards" and "In The Misty Moonlight".

Nashville, Tenn.- The aptly named <strong>Angel Band</strong> features soaring, angelic three-part harmonies from three amazing singers - <strong>Nancy Josephson</strong>, <strong>Jen Schonwald</strong> and <strong>Kathleen Weber</strong> - each possessing a powerful, expressive voice that would make her the lead vocalist in any other band. Their sound is grounded in world-class musicianship, inventive and original songwriting and an irresistible mission to have and share a great time. That's evident on their sophomore CD, <em>With Roots & Wings</em>, due out May 27 on Appleseed Recordings. Legendary producer and pedal steel player Lloyd Maines produced and played on the album.<br><br> Angel Band first formed out of a weekly jam session headed up by Josephson's husband, GRAMMY-nominated folk music legend <strong>David Bromberg</strong>. As the band coalesced, they often served as openers and backup singers for Bromberg as he began touring after a long hiatus. He returned the favor, becoming the cornerstone of Angel Band's backing musicians. Playfully named Chum, the rest of the band is Bob Taylor (bass), Bobby Tangrea (mandolin, guitar, fiddle), Nate Grower (fiddle) and Jeff Wisor (fiddle). They were joined in the studio by Richard Crooks (drums), Bukka Allen (accordion), Marc Moss (hand drums, piano), Johnny Duke Lippincott (guitar) and Terri Hendrix (handclaps and the invaluable get down).<br><br> In a chaotic and rapidly changing music industry landscape, Angel Band focuses all their energies on the things they can control and the things that they believe in - making great music and hitting the road to perform and connect with fans. With the release of <em>With Roots & Wings</em>, the band will continue to tour as opener for Bromberg, as well as playing an increasing number of concerts on their own.<br><bR> Josephson is remarkably succinct and straightforward in detailing the band's vision for broadening their audience. Michelle Wright has, over the last fifteen years, sold around 2 million records (5 gold and 2 multi-platinum), enjoyed 25 top ten hits in her native Canada and received more than 30 major awards. Born to country performers, Michelle grew up in Ontario and though she was surrounded by country music her first musical loves were rhythm and blues and Motown. After studying counselling for people with learning difficulties Michelle toured northern USA and in 1988 released her first album, “Do Right By Me” for the Savannah label (this was re-released in 1997). Two years later (1990) the beautiful young Canadian signed with Arista Records in Nashville. “Michelle Wright” was very well received ensuring a follow-up, “Now and Then” (1992) featuring the top single “Take It Like A Man”. The album and single generated an Academy of Country Music Award for “Top New Female Artist” and twelve top Canadian Awards. The album sold double platinum. Michelle, now a resident of Tennessee, eventually decided to return to the Savannah label and her country roots with the stunning “Everything And More”. The album features a dozen excellent songs superbly performed and offering so much for both a dancing and listening audience. I find it difficult to select just two or three favourites but pushed to the limit I would suggest the deeply moving “Love Me Anyway”, the optimistic “You Can’t Lose Them All” and the beautiful “In The Blink Of An Eye”. Michelle Wright may not be recording for the major labels these days but I would suggest “Everything And More” is her finest work to date. www.michelle-wright.com Jim Blackie lives in Michigan, hardly the deep south but as far as Jim’s concerned the place to be if you want good old country music. Though I know little or nothing about Jim Blackie, just that I enjoyed his debut album three years ago and that I am more than enjoying his current album, “I’m Back” (Comstock). By listening to the new album I am able to detect that Blackie is influenced by both Lefty Frizzell and Johnny Cash, the opening track, “I Don’t Need You Baby”, has a beautiful warm baritone, the same sort of style that made Lefty a hero, and “Tribute To Johnny” is a loving reminder of the “man in black”. The bulk of the songs, eleven in all and all composed by Jim, are heart ballads, a genre the singer is so comfortable with and include “Someone”, “You Tell Me You Like Me” and “I Loved You”. www.JimBlackie.com This week’s memorable days. “The Advertiser” (UK) – 2 May 2008 Once in a very blue moon comes along an album that demands your entire, and constant, attention. One such album is “Hottest Music This Side Of West Hell” (Comstock) by Giddyup. Giddyup are a quartet of Tim and Mike Ott, Lee Goins and Milo Deering, all experienced musicians who are deeply in love with western music, to an extent that Mike recorded an album called “Lonesome Cowboy” and wrote a book of poetry titled “A Cowboy Soul”. The music these four guys make on their current album is truly the hottest this side of west hell with ten magnificent songs penned by Mike and an exciting instrumental written by Tim. Tim is one hell of a guitarist and it is his picking (acoustic and electric) together with Milo’s fiddling that lifts this album to another level. Mike and Lee lay down a solid foundation of bass and drums respectively. Vocals, lead and harmony are superb and bring to life stories such as the Native American tragedy “Grey Wolf”, trail songs “Ridin’ In The Rain” and “Stampede” and the humorous “No Horse Town”. The instrumental, “Firewagon”, showcases Tim’s wonderful guitar picking, reminding me strongly of a 1980s Ricky Skaggs. Cowboy music? Yes but not entirely of the campfire variety. This is western music for a new generation. Miss it a your peril! www.giddyup.net When one refers to a veteran performer one expects strong stories of life surrounded by equally strong country sounds. Ervin Allen is a veteran and you get what you would expect in spades! Raised in Madison, Wisconsin, Ervin was initially influenced by Elvis and his flamboyant performing style and the Beatles for their harmonies and the lyrical quality of their songs. Later his influences would include Johnny Cash, Roger Miller and Hank Snow, then Gordon Lightfoot, John Prine and Bob Dylan. The fact that Ervin has learned much from these legendary singer/writers is evident on his current album, the entirely original, “Alaska…Land Of The Midnight Sun”, and its programme of ten strong story songs. The album is long on home, a longing for and an appreciation of, with songs like “I’m Homeward Bound”, “Basswood”, “Green, Green Valley” and “Alaska” (a world-wide radio hit single). “Home” has always been a popular country theme almost as popular as “love” and Ervin explores this territory effectively with “You’re In My Memory”, “She Didn’t Love Me” and “Let’s Make A Memory Tonight”. Produced by Andrew LaValley in Wisconsin, the album features a bunch of unknown (to me) but extremely talented musicians. In her 30 plus years as a performer Tammy enjoyed many hits though for most of that time she suffered stomach related problems that led to twenty-six visits to the operating table. She passed away on 6 April 1998.

“The Advertiser” (UK) 18 April 2008 Rockabilly was, and still to some extent still is, a man thing. For a female to break into this male dominated arena she had to be something rather special. Laura Lee Perkins was, and still is, a very special lady. A very talented young woman Laura Lee not only sings but also plays piano, guitar, ukulele, drums and trumpet. She was born Alice Faye Perkins in Killarney, West Virginia where as a child she sang in school, church, and any place where there was a piano and someone willing to listen. She graduated from Stoco High School in 1957 and at the age of 17 years she left home taking all her possessions in a cardboard box and headed for Cleveland, Ohio. The big city was too overpowering so she moved west to the small township of Elyria, Ohio where she secured a job as a waitress in a restaurant just across the street from Radio Station WEOL. One night a D.J, Jeff Baxter heard Laura playing the piano and was so impressed he made a tape and sent copies to Imperial Records, in Hollywood and Sun Records in Memphis. Laura was offered a contract by both labels but opted for Imperial. In February of 1958 Laura flew to California where she recorded several songs, two of which she wrote herself. Returning to Ohio Laura continued to perform live shows, often with top recording artists of that era. In 1958 Laura saw the release of her debut single, "Kiss Me Baby", a rocking little number featuring guitar ace Joe Maphis. The single gained many positive reviews but sales were disappointing. Five weeks later Imperial released the follow-up, “Don’t Wait Up” but though Laura toured extensively in support of the song, again sales did not match expectations. The following year, 1959, Laura travelled to Detroit, Michigan where she joined up with several bands to tour throughout the United States and Canada. In 1963, she married Neal Kitts and with him had 3 fine sons. She continued to sing and later wrote and sang jingles for radio and TV. She still lives in the Detroit area and still sings whenever the opportunity arises. It is now half a century since Laura Lee cut her first sides and to celebrate she has released an album she recorded in 2006. “I’m Back And Here We Go!” includes four recent songs penned by Laura Lee, the six sides she recorded in the fifties and a few golden oldies including rocking versions of Hank Williams “Jambalaya” and “I Just Don’t Like This Kind Of Livin’” and Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” plus Laura Lee’s own “A Better Life”, “The Wrong Kind” and “Oh La Baby”. www.lauraleeperkins.com “The Advertiser” 25 April 2008 Mark Brine was part of the folk movement of the 1960s. During the seventies he moved to Nashville to be closer to the traditional country music that he loved but by that time pop country had become the in-thing. He could have joined in or become an “Outlaw” but his musical integrity would not allow that. Mark came to the attention of Hank Snow who invited him to join the “Grand Ole Opry”. The pop country sounds began to take over the Opry and so Mark had to leave. Undeterred Brine has continued to keep alive those true country sounds and along with them the spirit of Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and other great pioneers. After five singles released between 1978 and 1980, Mark returned to the recording studios to cut his first album, on cassette, for the KJK label, “Return To Americana”, one of the first instances of the term “Americana” being used in connection with music. This was followed three years later by a vinyl album, “American Pieces”, again for KJK. Another seven years without an album, then in 1995, along came the magnificent “New Blue Yodel” (Resigned). No one could accuse Brine of being a prolific recording artist, well not until after 1999 when during a nine-year period he released ten albums. It was in 2003 when I became really acquainted with Mark through his “For Karrie” album, his talent simply astounded me and I went on to review, for both “The Advertiser” and the late, lamented “Country Music Round Up”, “Fortunes” (2004), “I’m Not Anyone” (2005) and “I Deliver” (2006). Now I am privileged to bring to your attention Mark’s latest offering “Out On Luke’s Highway” (Wild Oats). This is a superb collection of 14 songs, ten of them originals that, through the brilliance of performance, bring into the twenty-first century the sounds of the 1930s and 1940s. Mark’s own songs vary in mood from the happy “Long Lost Art Of Common Sense” to the devotional “Karrie’s Smile” to the spiritual “He Wrote Our Names”. Mark lovingly revives the oft forgotten Hank Snow tale of tragedy “Little Buddy”, introduces a slightly new sound to Hank Williams’ “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and remains faithful to Jimmie Rodgers on “T. For Texas”. Helping Mark on this project are Linda Joseph (brilliant fiddle work throughout, and harmony vocals), Denis Colby (electric guitar), Tony Palmer (steel), John Ownby (bass fiddle) and Rick Lonow (snare drums). Mark’s son, Keeve, makes a guest appearance on a couple of tracks playing snare and acoustic guitar. Mark Brine’s work deserves recognition for his preservation of the sounds of real country music. We've started a new compilation cd to do for independent Contemporary Christian artists(pop, rock, modern gospel, etc) what we've been able to acheive for our independent Country Artists. Jason Eady and the Wayfaring Apostles (what a wonderful name!) are a quartet from Texas who truly know what country music is all about. Jason, after a spell in the Air Force, cut his debut album, “From Underneath The Old”, in 2005 and shortly after teamed up with the multi instrumentalist Scott Davis (guitar, mandolin, Dobro, lap steel, banjo, vocals) and the experienced drummer/vocalist Kenny Smith. Jordan Kiener was the first, and only picker, to be auditioned for bass player. Jordan also sings harmony. It really is amazing how well these four guys fit together. It is as though they share the same musically brain on “Wild Eyed Serenade” (Littoraria). All but one of the twelve songs is original and provides a feast of picking and singing that will thrill any country heart. The songs are poetic, yet never pretentious, and are pretty addictive too; I found it extremely difficult to take the disc from my player. It is not hard to see where these guys’ influences lie. There is considerable Steve Earle in “Confidently Wrong”, a little Neil Young in “Waiting To Shine” and a lot of bluegrass in “Before I Was Dead”. Really amazing stuff! Finally a stunning a Capella version of “Walking In Jerusalem”. This is right on the money country from a bunch of guys who live their music! www.jasoneady.com I like John Anthony Franklin - I like him a lot. Not just because he is a talented musician, singer and writer but because he loves and understands country music. This is quite obvious from just one listen to the album “Last Cowboy” and the twelve well crafted Franklin originals. Quite recently Franklin, a northern boy, discovered he had illustrious ancestors from the south and this no doubt influenced the album, which incidentally, was recorded partly in the north and partly in the south. The songs are interesting, entertaining and beautifully performed. They paint pictures of a wide landscape that travels down a “Trucking Highway” to a “Tennessee Highway” where he meets his “Holy Girl” and receives the “Greatest Gift”. Great though these songs are none can surpass the heartbreakingly beautiful “Pretty Polly”, for me one the best songs of this, and probably any other, year. www.JohnAnthonyFranklin.com Remembering Red Sovine who died twenty-eight years ago today (4 April). Though Red had a fine singing voice he will always be remembered for his tear jerking recitations such as “Giddy Up Go”, “Phantom 309”, “Teddy Bear” and “Little Joe”. Red died in a car crash in Nashville. There certainly are stars in that southern sky. Happy birthday to Merle Haggard who will be 71 on Sunday and to Bobby Bare who celebrates his seventy-third birthday on Monday. Remember there are stars in the southern sky.

On top of racking up sky miles from traveling the country visiting with radio, Paradigm Nashville Recording Artist, Brett Hill, has found time to team up with the Coffee County Sheriff for a good cause. Right after attending the annual CRS convention in Nashville, Hill teamed up with Sheriff Steve Graves in order to put on an enormous fund raising concert to benefit Breast Cancer Research. Brett has made many aquaintences in the music business, and he is using those ties to call in the troops for this event which will take place Saturday May17th at the Coffee County Fairgrounds in Manchester, TN. Many artists have already put their names in the hat for this event and are looking forward to helping out. "This is just the Brett Hill we all know and love." Says Hill's management.
